Shae was still in the Navy. Being the strong, suck-it-up kind of guy he is, to admit to the pain he was in seemed weak.
As the pain seemed to worsen and be more frequent, he went more into denial.
"It is fine. I am fine." He would say as he rubbed his jaw.
He wasn't fine. He wasn't ok.
The Navy decided to send him out to sea on a ship. He was excited to have the opportunity to serve his country in this way.
Yet, as a young wife and mother of two small children, I did not look forward to five long months alone. There was no family anywhere nearby. I had few friends in Key West, so had no one to help or talk to. I knew that Shae could tell the Navy about his pain and get out of going to sea. I desperately wanted him to not go. Ultimately, I knew that to go on the ship was the right thing for him to do.
So he went.
His pain was consistent while on the ship. It hadn't gotten to the pain level that it would in years to come, so he was able to cope and make it through the five months cutting circles in the ocean.
